Upon graduation, he was awarded the United States Navy Health Professions Scholarship and attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, graduating with Honors in Clinical Practice. He subsequently spent six years as a Navy Dental Officer, serving in North Carolina, Morocco, and Pearl Harbor.

Dr. Keener completed a three-year residency in Orthodontics at the University of Michigan, where he was the recipient of the James A. McNamara Fellowship Award. His research on Canine Impaction has been published in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. Dr. Keener is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthodontics, a distinction less than 2/3 of orthodontists receive.

Like Dr. Horbaly, Dr. Keener has accepted the position of Assistant Professor of Orthodontics at the University of Virginia Health System’s Department of Dentistry, mentoring residents in the General Practice Residency. Additionally, he will serve on the University's Cleft Palate team, treating patients with cleft lip and palate and craniofacial disorders.

Outside of the clinic, Dr. Keener enjoys spending time with his wife, Leigh Anne, their two boys, their golden retriever, “Cheese,” and, of course, cheering on Penn State football! Dr. Keener is proud to maintain his orthodontic office as a private, local, and veteran-owned office serving the Charlottesville community!
